War On Whim

Today marks the fifth anniversary of Colin Powell’s address to the United Nations about Iraqi WMD. This was the speech that cost Powell his(as well as the country's) credibility and turned The War On Terror into A War On Whim.  We now know that Powell's presentation was based on false intelligence. Powell has admitted that the presentation was against his better judgment.  He was ultimately dismissed as  US secretary of state and replaced with a more compliant Condoleezza Rice. Powell testified that Saddam Hussien had WMD and did indeed pose an imminent threat. He later told Barbara Walters when asked on 20/20 if he felt this would hurt his credibility  "Of course it will. It's a blot. I'm the one who presented it on behalf of the United States to the world, and [it] will always be a part of my record. It was painful. It's painful now." He also said he felt "terrible" about it. I'm sure that there's around 4000 families in the U.S. that feel terrible as well. This was the speech that clinched the assault on Iraq and it was based on lies. It amazes me that Democrats took such ridicule from Move-on.com's article of when they asked  General Petraeus not to betray us after the nation humbly genuflected to the honest Colin Powell.
