Honest George Bush continued his fear mongering again this week and once again exploits 9/11 for his own or for corporate gain. In his weekly radio address yesterday, Bush made the statements:
" Good morning. At the stroke of midnight tonight, a vital intelligence law that is helping protect our nation will expire. Congress had the power to prevent this from happening, but chose not to."
"This means that as terrorists change their tactics to avoid our surveillance, we may not have the tools we need to continue tracking them -- and we may lose a vital lead that could prevent an attack on America."
Mitch McConnell, the lap dog that he is chimed in with:
"On Sunday, the terrorist tracking program the Director of National Intelligence tells us has led ‘to the disruption of planned terrorist attacks’ no longer will be fully operational because of Congressional inaction. What is most distressing is that the terrorists haven’t ceased their activities, but we’ve conceded the capability to fully track them because the House Democrat Leadership blocked a vote on a bipartisan solution and then chose to close up shop and go home without completing their work.''
Mitch stated earlier this year:
" The American people should be frightened and remember full well what happened on 9/11. They also remember with gratitude that this has not happened again for six years."
Congressman Tom Price wrote an article at Redstate claiming: "the Democrat leadership in the House is disregarding their solemn oath to defend the American people and abdicating their constitutional responsibilities."
Of course, the Bush regime had a fear mongering prelude this week with statements such as:
"At this moment, somewhere in the world, terrorists are planning new attacks on our country. Their goal is to bring destruction to our shores that will make September the 11th pale by comparison."
White House press secretary Dana Perino said:
" the expiration of the Protect America Act "will harm our ability to conduct surveillance to detect new threats to our security, including the locations, intentions and capabilities of terrorists and other foreign intelligence targets abroad."
My response to several blogs this week was that this was indeed some scary stuff. If this administration had a shred of credibility, an iota of honesty, or perhaps a slight chance that the real goal wasn't in corporate interest, I might consider giving their statements a possibility of a second look.
But the Bush and GOP team once again lives up to their reputation and the true colors once again show. Even the conservative Washington Times acknowledges "There's no reason to think our nation will be in any more danger in 2008 than it was in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, or 2006." It also states: "Many intelligence scholars and analysts outside the government say that today's expiration of certain temporary domestic wiretapping laws will have little effect on national security".
The real reason the Bush Administration is once again using 9/11 to instill fear in the peasants is really to protect AT&T and Verison from being accountable for their illegal actions. From the director of national security Mike McConnell's own admission:
"It's true that some of the authorities would carry over to the period they were established for one year. That would put us into the August, September time-frame. However, that's not the real issue. The issue is liability protection for the private sector."
Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid released this joint statement:
"The Protect America Act will expire only because the President and congressional Republicans refused to approve an extension of that law. Their true concern here is not national security. Rather, they want to protect the financial interests of telecommunications companies and avoid judicial scrutiny of their warrantless wiretapping program."
“Congressional Democrats will continue to work on a bipartisan basis to finalize a strong law. As we do, there should be no question in anyone’s mind that U.S. intelligence agencies have the legal ability to take all actions necessary to protect the security of the American people. For anyone to suggest otherwise is irresponsible and totally inaccurate.
“In particular, the law protects telecommunication carriers, and we will ensure that no lawfully cooperating carrier is disadvantaged by the President’s decision to block a brief extension of the Protect America Act.”
The President and Mitch McConnell continue to mislead the country, exploit the people as well as our soldiers for their own personal gains. President Bush will be gone in January 2009 and the country will be better for it. Kentucky will have an opportunity to rid the country of the corrupt Mitch McConnell. While Mitch may bring home the pork for Kentucky, it should be obvious that he has been Bush's right hand man in fear mongering, catering to the wealthy, costing the country jobs, continuing the War On Fear in Iraq, and leading the country into a costly recession. Ultimately, Kentuckians will share in the cost of his corruption. I hope we don't miss the opportunity in November of making Kentucky a better place for our children and grandchildren.
